How to split a bank statement PDFinto one file per month
A walkthrough of splitting a multi-month statement in your browser using the FileHook Bank Statement Splitter. No software install, no signup for the first 3 months.
- 1
Open the bank statement splitter
Go to FileHook's Bank Statement Splitter page in any modern browser. Nothing to install — the tool loads as a web page and runs locally in your tab.
- 2
Drop in your multi-month statement
Drag your bank statement PDF onto the upload card, or click to browse. Works with US bank statements from Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citi, Capital One, US Bank, PNC, Truist and most credit unions. The file is read locally — it does not leave your device.
- 3
Wait for month detection
The splitter scans every page's text layer for date markers like "Statement period", "January 2024", or transaction-date stamps. Pages without their own header inherit the most recent month detected — so mid-statement pages still group correctly. Detection usually takes a few seconds.
- 4
Review and adjust the detected months
Each detected month appears as a group with a thumbnail of its pages. If a month or year was missed or mislabelled, click the month/year field to fix it. If a page landed in the wrong group, drag it into the correct one. Most statements need zero edits.
- 5
Pick free or Pro
Free tier covers the first 3 months of any statement and adds a small watermark to each output PDF. Pro removes both limits for $9.99/month — useful for a full-year tax-season batch or for clean exports.
- 6
Download as ZIP or individual PDFs
Click "Download all" for a ZIP named like Statement-2024.zip containing Jan-2024.pdf through Dec-2024.pdf. Or download each month as a separate PDF. File names use the detected month and year — if the year could not be detected, the file is named Mon.pdf instead.
A few things to know in advance
- Scans need OCR. Image-only statements (no text layer) can't be auto-split yet. In-browser OCR for scanned statements is on the roadmap.
- Free covers 3 months. For a full year of statements or clean exports, Pro is $9.99/month.
- Private by default. Everything runs in your browser — your statement is never uploaded.
How to split a bank statement — FAQ
How long does it take to split a 12-month statement?+
Detection typically takes 5–15 seconds for a year-long statement on a normal laptop. Larger files (over 50 MB) may take longer because the splitter parses every page's text layer.
Can I split a statement that mixes two accounts?+
If both accounts share month headers (one continuous date range), the splitter groups pages by month regardless of account. If accounts have separate statement periods on the same page, you may need to split by account first using the regular PDF Split tool, then run each split through the statement splitter.
What if my bank uses non-standard date formats?+
The splitter recognises most common formats — MM/DD/YYYY, YYYY-MM-DD, "January 2024", "Jan 1, 2024", "01-Jan-24". If your bank uses a format we miss, the detection will still keep most pages grouped, but you may need to adjust a few month labels manually before downloading.
Is my statement private?+
Yes. Everything runs in your browser — no upload, no analytics on the file contents, no account. Your statement stays on your device.
